Our Culture - Hear it from our workers

A Day in the life of...

Driver

My role is to provide safe and comfortable transport for elderly and disabled people between their home and a day centre. I also transport clients with learning difficulties to activity, employment and training opportunities. My typical day is fairly straightforward, the exceptions being a passenger taking ill, a vehicle breakdown or bad weather.

Patience and understanding are top priorities. Providing interaction with clients in order to understand their needs is vitally important because many suffer from problems with mobility or dementia and require that ‘little bit extra’.

I started working part time relief in 1999, although more often than not it was full time! I moved to a permanent full time position in 2002.

I have to admit that the main attraction initially was the part time flexibility, but I also enjoy driving and being out and about.

North Yorkshire County Council covers such a huge and diverse area of work that it would be difficult not to find suitable employment for a wide variety of talent and expertise.
